In response to a series of questions to ACT recently asking about reporting procedures for KS3 Citizenship education, we would like to remind teachers of the current requirements.
Teachers are obliged to make their teacher assessment judgement in citizenship at Key Stage 3 using the 2007 statutory level descriptions. A ‘brief commentary’ of pupils’ attainment in citizenship must be included in the Head Teachers annual report. This means a brief account of what the teacher assessments (and, in relation to the second and third key stages, the pupil’s NC tests results) show about the pupil’s progress individually, and in relation to other pupils in the same year, which draws attention to any particular strengths and weaknesses of the pupil.
Citizenship education teachers should ensure that their schools follow this advice and report progress to parents with a level at the end of KS3 as usual. Schools should also ensure that pupils in years other than Y9 have an annual report to parents outlining progress in Citizenship across the year.
