Dialogue continues with DfE about Citizenship

04 July 2012

Last week, ACT and Democratic Life made further representations to the Department for Education about the future of Citizenship education. Concerns were raised that the on-going uncertainty about the subject and policy decisions were undermining support for the Citizenship in schools.

Though a positive dialogue continues between all parties, the DfE has not said when it will make announcements about the secondary National Curriculum, so the waiting continues. The curriculum review offers an excellent opportunity to clarify the status of the subject and provide a secure foundation for citizenship learning in secondary education.

ACT continues to ask the DfE to make a clear commitment to statutory Citizenship continuing in our National Curriculum and to support this with a review of the designation of the subject as ‘non-priority’ and proper allocation of places for teacher training.
