Citizenship education outside England

ACT has worked for a number of years with partner schools, universities and governments in the five "home nations", across Europe and beyond. Many of these nations have produced resources and case studies in their own language and ACT is keen to share these with those from outside UK who browse our web pages.

Five Nations Network

Despite considerable differences in culture, history and approach to citizenship and values education in each of the Five Nations, the broad context driving current developments is similar and with it come similar challenges and concerns in each educational system.

  • In England, Citizenship is a statutory subject in schools
  • In Ireland, Civic Social and Political Education (CSPE) is statutory during junior cycle in schools
  • In Northern Ireland, Local and Global Citizenship is a statutory subject in schools
  • In Scotland, Values and Citizenship is one of the Five National Priorities in Education
  • In Wales, Citizenship is part of the statutory provision for Personal and Social Education (PSE) and Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC)

Colleagues from Sundbyoster Skole in Kobenhavn describe Citizenship education activities at their community school.

"Syv hundre kroner via Folkekirkens Noedhjaelp til katastroferamte boern paa Haiti. Beslutningen om at donere projektugens overskud, blev taget af elevraadet paa et meget tidligt tidspunkt efter ugens undervisning, der blandt andet handlede om jordskaelvet og dets dramatiske konsekvenser for mange boern og voksne. Pludselig fik de rettigheder, ansvar og pligter, som eleverne kender lokalt paa skolen, en global vinkel, da internettet, aviser og TV viste billeder af sammenstyrtede bygninger og hjemloese uden en normal hverdag med arbejde, skole, mad og rent drikkevand." Освіта для демократії в Україні

Description of the Civic education project from 2006-2009 and the report on the project.

З метою надання базових знань щодо громадянства в багатьох європейських країнах була введена громадянська освіта. Цей проект став продовженням попереднього проекту, фінансованого ЄС Освіта для демократії в Україні (2000-2002), і був спрямований на консолідацію громадянської освіти в новій 12-річній системі шкільної освіти на національному рівні.

Проект розпочався у березні 2005 р. і закінчився у березні 2008 р. Міністерство освіти і науки обрало 4 пілотні області для його впровадження: Херсонську, Волинську та Вінницьку області та місто Київ і по 25 шкіл у кожній з них.
