Citizenship Established Conference March 1st 2010

A conference aimed at leaders in education, children’s services and heritage sectors will support the launch of the Ofsted Citizenship Report, ‘Citizenship Established’.

A conference aimed at leaders in education, children’s services and heritage sectors will take place on 1 March at the Thackray Museum, Leeds, supporting the launch of the Ofsted Citizenship Report, ‘Citizenship Established’ (Citizenship in schools 2006/09). The report is based on a sample of similar size to the 2006 report, ‘Towards consensus?’ It indicates steady progress, as Citizenship becomes more widely understood and acquires depth in the light of experience, but also raises the issues that schools need to tackle if Citizenship is to be firmly established. The conferences will also look at recent developments in Citizenship education, including how museums and archives can provide support through the innovative Campaign! Make an Impact programme.

Speakers include:

Judith Matharu, HMI Ofsted

Alison Bodley, Campaign! Make an Impact, British Library

Kirsten Gibbs / Justine Reilly, MLA Council

Liz Craft, QCDA

Chris Waller, Association of Citizenship Teaching

David Kerr, National Foundation for Educational Research

Yorkshire and Humber Global Schools Association

Promoting a Global Dimension in Education

The Yorkshire and Humber Global Schools Association has been set up to enhance provision for the Global Dimension in our region for primary, secondary and special schools. This is in response to a national initiative by the Department for International Development (DFID) and similar activities have been taking place in other regions and countries of the UK.

The YHGSA is a membership organisation with approximately 400 members. Membership is free. Individuals join because they have an interest in global issues and in the challenges facing the education system in embedding teaching about these issues in the curriculum. Members welcome receiving information about the YHGSA’s activities directly to their home or school address and are also keen to help the Association by taking part in consultations and surveys.

Community Cohesion

Cohesion Bradford

The Diversity and Cohesion Service is part of Education Bradford and incorporates the interfaith Education Centre and the Supplementary Schools support.

They offer help for schools in delivering anti – racist education, promoting community cohesion and citizenship, through strategic and curriculum initiatives. They also help teachers with the delivery of RE and worship. Part of their role is to enable schools to see that equality, diversity and community cohesion are whole school issues and not ‘add ons’. For this reason they are involved in producing 21st century resources to support learning across the curriculum. In addition they offer CPD to teachers and others interested in education and young people.

www.cohesionbradford.org is for all those interested in community cohesion in the Bradford Metropolitan District and beyond. It is a site that explores national and district wide initiatives in equality and community cohesion aimed at children and young people. It provides information about on-going projects and a forum for teachers and others involved in education, to share experiences, views and good practice.

The Diversity and Cohesion Service aims to encourage all children to:

  • Learn and achieve to their full potential
  • Feel secure and valued
  • Develop a sense of confidence in their personal identity
  • Feel good about themselves and where they live
  • Know that diversity is valued and interact with diverse people
  • Engage with a curriculum and an environment which positively reflects their cultural, national, ethnic and (if appropriate) religious heritage
  • Have equal access to education regardless of difference or ability
  • Experience ‘zero tolerance’ of racism and discrimination

www.cohesionbradford.org is a website managed by Education Bradford’s Diversity and Cohesion Service, for all those interested in community cohesion in the Bradford Metropolitan District and beyond. It is a site that explores national and district wide initiatives in community cohesion aimed at children and young people. Global Citizenship Awareness Raising for KS3 Case study

North East Lincolnshire

The Healthy Schools Team invited students from local secondary and special schools came together to consider Global Issues and to participate in some activities to highlight issues affecting young people.

The aim of the session was to enable students to gain some ideas on how to look at Global issues in the classroom and cascade their findings back in school

We started the session with a wants and needs activity. Students soon found it hard to identify the two things they felt were essential to stay alive.

This was then linked to the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Students spent time identifying which of their needs were highlighted in the rights and which rights were denied to children who did not have their needs met. A wish wall was put together by students to highlight universal needs and wants

We then looked at an activity that encouraged students to step ‘into other peoples’ shoes’. Pictures were shared around and students brainstormed what they thought was happening, what the people in the picture were feeling, and what could be done to change the situations. These were then shared in a carousel, as different groups looked at other pictures and added their ideas to the brainstorm sheets.

Having considered children and their rights the emphasis shifted to look at sustainability. Taking the humble pint (litre?) of milk we considered just how sustainable a variety of options were. Ranging from basic supermarket cartons to goats milk, oat milk and Soya options, as well as organic and locally produced options, students completed a chart to see how each fared when rated on content, food miles, price and packaging. There were some surprising results! Groups had the opportunity to produce a diamond 9 showing how important these issues are when choosing everyday items.

Students took Rights booklets from Unicef away with them hoping to share them with class members. Staff who accompanied their students felt that the activities were going to be useful to build in to their curriculum in the future.
