Citizenship education is essential for preparing young people to engage meaningfully in democracy, yet its place in schools remains under threat. A shortage of specialist teachers, limited curriculum time, and inconsistent provision mean too many students miss out on the knowledge and skills they need to participate in society.
That’s why more than 100 leading educators, academics, and policymakers—including Lord Blunkett, Baroness Lister, and MPs from across the political spectrum—have signed ACT’s Open Letter, calling for urgent action to strengthen Citizenship as a statutory subject.
With the government reviewing the national curriculum and debating whether to lower the voting age to 16, now is the time to demand a high-quality Citizenship education for every young person.
