Make Space for Citizenship - a discussion focussed on the DfE Curriculum and Assessment Review
A new commitment to National Curriculum Citizenship must be a key priority in the Curriculum and Assessment Review being led by Becky Francis and a group of experts. The Secretary of State has set out a clear ambition for the Review, to “enable children and young people to develop the knowledge and skills required to thrive as citizens, in work and throughout life”. Many agree that it is time to reset priorities in schools to ensure the curriculum is broad, relevant and motivating for all learners, and guarantees high quality, statutory Citizenship for every learner.
A panel of teachers, academics and other education experts will discuss:
- why Citizenship as a subject must be reprioritised in a broad curriculum focussed on high standards for all
- what needs to change to ensure the refreshed Citizenship National Curriculum sets clear expectations and teaching requirements for key stages 1 to 4
- how to ensure there is a new commitment in schools and space for Citizenship as a curriculum and qualification subject
- what the research and evidence tells us about what works to ensure Citizenship is an entitlement for every learner.
