This session will focus on developing teacher knowledge of the law in relation to LGBT rights and hate crime.

This webinar is delivered by the University of Law Pro Bono team and Bar Practice course students, and aims to develop knowledge around protected characteristics and the associated laws.

With particular reference to the increase in homophobic and transphobic crime, ULaw will explain what constitutes “hate crime” and what action can be taken by the law to support an inclusive society, with reference to the Crime and Disorder and the Criminal Justice Act. Following the lecture style presentation, there is a Q&A with a qualified Barrister.

You will leave the session with-

• knowledge of key human rights laws and legal actions that can be taken to prevent hate crime.
• understanding of the route to becoming a barrister.

Guest Speakers:

The webinar is supervised by Douglas Lloyd and a selection of students training to become barristers. Douglas is a Barrister and tutor on the Bar Practice Course (BPC) at the University of Law. His expertise are in Crime and Regulatory Law, International Law, and Human Rights. Douglas draws upon over a decade of experience at the Bar, where he has prosecuted and defended cases attracting national media coverage.

The BPC at the University of Law is the vocational stage of training required before the final practical stage of training to become a barrister. The course is highly competitive and students are required to pass a selection process to join the course. The students delivering the presentation are undertaking the Pro Bono route required for a Masters level qualification.
