This course is designed for secondary school teachers who are looking to build their subject knowledge and pedagogy to teach media literacy through citizenship. This is part of a wider project supported by the US Embassy and involving ShoutOut UK.

Teachers will become:

-confident in using key terms and concepts to teach media literacy in citizenship

-competent in using critical thinking and other pedagogies

-skilled at using news and media topical issues to build resilience and counter negative news effects

The course is structured in 3 parts that link together:

Session 1: establishes the difference between mis, dis and mal-information and explores the impact of negative news in a democratic society

Session 2: will use real and topical issues including the covid19 pandemic and explore practical teaching approaches to building pupils' knowledge, understanding and skills

Session 3: will involve teachers using their learning from sessions 1 and 2 to develop their own lessons and resources and exploring wider implications of negative news events in different societies across the world

For teachers attending all 3 sessions, they will be required to complete self-study tasks between sessions 1 & 2.

The total price for the course for ACT Members is £30, and for Non-Members £45

For those who complete all 3 parts you will receive an official CPD certificate from ACT

and the UK Embassy in London
