Make Space for Citizenship – A Discussion focussed on the DfE Curriculum and Assessment Review
With the Department for Education’s (DfE) Curriculum and Assessment Review led by Becky Francis, there is an opportunity to reposition Citizenship as a key priority for every school. Join us for this critical conversation about the future of Citizenship education and how the National Curriculum can better prepare students to thrive as citizens in an ever-changing world.
The time has come for a renewed commitment to Citizenship education in schools. Our online panel discussion will explore the pressing need for a high-quality, statutory Citizenship curriculum, emphasising its vital role in shaping informed, engaged citizens.
About this event
The DfE Curriculum and Assessment Review is a pivotal moment for the future of education in the UK. The Secretary of State has set out a clear ambition for the Review, to “enable children and young people to develop the knowledge and skills required to thrive as citizens, in work and throughout life”. Many agree that it is time to reset priorities in schools to ensure the curriculum is broad, relevant and motivating for all learners, and guarantees high quality, statutory Citizenship for every learner.
A panel of teachers, academics and other education experts will discuss:
- Why must Citizenship education be reprioritised in a broad, inclusive curriculum that maintains high standards for all students?
- What changes are needed to ensure that the revised National Curriculum for Citizenship sets clear expectations and teaching requirements from Key Stages 1 to 4?
- How can we secure a renewed commitment from schools to dedicate space for Citizenship, both as a curriculum subject and a formal qualification?
- What does the latest research and evidence tell us about best practices in Citizenship education, ensuring it becomes an entitlement for all learners?
This discussion aims to inform the next phase of the Review and ensure that Citizenship is not only protected but enhanced within the curriculum.
