Citizenship's profile raised as Ministers discuss the importance of the subject

Nick Gibb July 2019In the last few weeks, both Education Secretary Damian Hinds and Education Minister Nick Gibb have been making speeches about the importance of Citizenship.

Damian Hinds spoke last week and again this week about the role of Citizenship in developing digital and media literacy to address coercion, disinformation and 'fake news'.

Nick Gibb told teachers at a major conference on Finance education that Citizenship is the key national curriculum subject along with Mathematics in which finance education is taught.

This follows a year of successful lobbying by ACT to raise the profile and create support for the subject, including our work to influence the new Ofsted school inspection framework which from September will inspect Citizenship as part of the Quality of Education measure and Personal Development.

Over the last year, we have been -

Lobbying BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) about employment rights, exploitation and the minimum wage; DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) about a media literacy strategy; HM Treasury about economic and finance education; MHCLG (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government) about diversity and social cohesion; and the DfE and Ofsted.

Seeking alliances with NEU, NASUWT, NAHT and the Teaching Schools Council.

Producing resources - ACTive Citizenship Award Scheme with First News; The Deliberative ClassroomHaving a Say – teaching suffrage and equalityCurriculum opportunities for teaching Economic and Finance education in Citizenship.

Producing guidance for senior leaders in schools - our short Citizenship Matters Briefing for Senior Leaders provides key information about Citizenship, its status in the curriculum and the new Ofsted inspection framework for schools. It sets out the requirements upon all schools to make provision for Citizenship, and how the subject relates to other important national policies.

Collaborating with organisations including First News; Parliament Education Service; National Literacy Trust; UCL Institute of Education and Kingston University; Money Advice and Pension Service; People’s History Museum; and the Guardian Foundation.

New Teaching Ambassadors and teaching hubs launched in Sheffield, Manchester, Leicester, Dudley, Gloucester, Weymouth, Portsmouth and London.

ACT Member opportunities Ten ACT teachers successfully applied to take part in a media literacy exchange with the U.S. and eleven ACT and Five Nations Network teachers successfully applied to take part in the Parliament Education Service's residential Teaching Institute.

Successful CPD day on curriculum planning, personal development and the new Ofsted inspection framework on Friday 5 July 2019 in London

Forty teachers and educators gathered for a day of practical sessions and guest inputs planned by the ACT Council of teachers to think about and plan their curriculum provision for citizenship, smsc and personal development, and consider the new Ofsted inspection framework.
