Plan your CPD for the whole academic year

This strand is designed for anybody who is new to the subject, from ITE trainees to experienced teachers who are teaching Citizenship for the first time. These events will allow participants to develop their understanding of the core substantive knowledge of the subject, key concepts and best practice in pedagogy.

Building on our current strong network of GCSE teachers, we have developed a bespoke strand for members who teach GCSE Citizenship Studies. The focus of sessions will include improving outcomes for the Citizenship Investigation (active citizenship), examination technique, and opportunities for teachers to support each other with moderation of assessments.

This strand is one of the most broad and allows us to develop specialist courses around particular curriculum topics where we know teachers need support. It also allows us to share new research with our community. Some of these sessions will be one off events while others will relate to topical events.

At the heart of the curriculum should be informed and responsible action, allowing students to demonstrate their substantive knowledge in a way that enables them to exercise their agency. This strand looks at the theory behind active citizenship and provides practical ways to embed active citizenship within the curriculum.

Leading Citizenship can be complex and often involves non specialist teachers taking on the role. This strand will look at the logistical role of subject leaders to embed Citizenship successfully across the school. It also helps those who lead Citizenship across multiple schools and need to develop their understanding of research-informed practice and how this influences the curriculum.

Developing specialist knowledge around key areas of the curriculum and GCSE specifications is key to helping pupils achieve their full potential. This strand brings together experts who will co-deliver bespoke training on concepts and topics related to the curriculum. Past sessions have addressed the knowledge teachers need for economic and finance education, the law, equality and rights.
