Our tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
It is with great sadness we learn of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We extend our sincere condolences to the Royal family. We know that many students and schools will be marking this sad occasion with their own tributes.
We want to mark Her Majesty’s extraordinary contribution as the longest serving Monarch, as mother and grandmother and as an inspirational female leader on the global stage. In Citizenship we teach about the constitution and the role of the Monarchy, about the relations between the UK, the commonwealth and the wider world and we explore issues of community, belonging, national identity and values. The Queen has been a role model in all of these regards, for children and indeed citizens everywhere. Her longevity of service and her enduring commitment to the nation inspired so many of us and continues to do so. Her work was conducted with dignity, humility and understanding of the people she served. She lived by her strong principles, her faith and her values and put those into action through her words and her actions. She had the ability to unite people from across the world and inspire them to become better people and to consider the needs of those around them.
Her Majesty spoke at the end of her Platinum Jubilee with words that will be long remembered, reflecting on her reign, a great day of celebration, and her hopes for the future.
When it comes to how to mark seventy years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first. But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee.
While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.
I have been inspired by the kindness, joy and kinship that has been so evident in recent days, and I hope this renewed sense of togetherness will be felt for many years to come.
