Are alternative resolution methods just? Lesson 3 of 6

Key stage 3 • Law and the justice system • Lessons

Are alternative resolution methods just?

This lesson is part 3 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How well is justice served through the legal system?

Building on what they have learned about sentencing, students analyse how alternative dispute resolution methods can restore a sense of justice – often known as restorative justice. Additionally, students understand strategies to educate young people about legal pathways to justice, promoting legal literacy and civic engagement through the planning of a board game. To conclude the lesson, students investigate who determines justice attainment, exploring the roles of judges, juries and legal systems.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:

  1. How can alternative resolution methods contribute to the sense of justice for the victim of the crime?
  2. Why should we teach young people about the legal path to justice?
  3. Who decides whether justice has been achieved?
