Teaching Controversial Issues in Citizenship - Teacher guidance
Full guidance
This guidance has been produced by the Association for Citizenship Teaching (ACT) to support primary and secondary schools and teachers as they develop their approach to handling controversial issues when teaching Citizenship. It aims to help teachers to:
● consider how to address controversial issues that arise through content taught in the Citizenship curriculum
● understand the role of the teacher and the Citizenship pedagogical tools available to help them address such issues
● feel more confident in planning teaching and learning that is appropriate within the context of their school and their pupils’ diverse needs and backgrounds
● be informed about what to do if they find a pupil is at risk of being drawn into issues or situations that are harmful, such as those relating to terrorism, extremist behaviour or conspiracy theories.
