Do we have the power to bring about change in our communities? Lesson 6 of 6

Key stage 3 (ages 11-14) • Active Citizenship • Lesson and support materials

Do we have the power to bring about change in our communities?

This lesson is part 6 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Who has the power to bring about change in our community?

Students demonstrate their learning in this scheme of work through simulated active citizenship, as they pitch their bid for funding for a grassroots development for the local community. In doing so, they develop a range of Citizenship skills. Students work collaboratively, peer assess presentations, take part in a consensus decision-making process to determine who should be awarded the grant, and assess their own progress and performance. Finally, based on their learning throughout the scheme of work, they discuss the key question of who has the power to bring about change in our local communities.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:
  1. Do we have the power to help our local community?
  2. How can we assess the success of bids and pitches?
  3. How can we reach consensus in decision-making?
