How are Bills debated in Parliament? Part 2
This lesson is the final part of a sequence of 7 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can citizens and Parliament work together for a more sustainable future?
In this final lesson, students will deepen their understanding of the debate process in the House of Lords by recalling key stages and engaging in a structured role-play debate on the Education (Environment and Sustainable Citizenship) Bill. They will analyse the voting process, discuss the implications of rejecting a Bill, and use evidence to construct persuasive arguments. By participating in a simulated second reading debate, students will develop their advocacy, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. The lesson concludes with a reflective activity where students justify their stance on the Bill, reinforcing their ability to articulate and defend informed opinions.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
- What happens if a Bill is voted against?
- Should this Private Members’ Bill become law?
- How can citizens and Parliament work together for a more sustainable future?
