How can volunteering improve a community? Lesson 3 of 6

Key stage 3 (ages 11-14) • Active Citizenship • Lesson and support materials

How can volunteering improve a community?

This lesson is part 3 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Who has the power to bring about change in our community?

Building on what they learnt about NGOs and charities in the previous lesson, students take a detailed look at volunteering. They investigate different types of volunteering, skills required, and the benefits to a community. They explore a case study interview with a volunteer and discover why people volunteer. Students also consider what types of volunteering they might be interested in doing in the future.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:
  1. What is volunteering?
  2. What are the different roles I can volunteer in?
  3. Why do people volunteer?
  4. What skills are needed to become a successful volunteer?
  5. What are the benefits of volunteering to local communities?
