Key stage 4 • Politics, Parliament and Government • Model curriculum
How do different countries govern themselves?
This lesson is part 3 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can we become the future political leaders?
This lesson focuses on exploring different forms of government worldwide, allowing students to critique and compare systems of governance. Through case studies of the USA, Saudi Arabia, and Norway, students examine the rights of citizens, the effectiveness of law-making, and the democratic nature of these governments. Key activities include discussions, debates, and knowledge checks, fostering critical thinking, reasoned argumentation, and understanding diverse perspectives. The lesson also emphasises maintaining political impartiality while teaching, providing guidance on creating a balanced and inclusive classroom environment.
Students engage in activities such as annotating worksheets, participating in debates, and completing knowledge checks to consolidate their learning. By examining real-world examples, they develop core citizenship skills, including understanding democracy, fairness, and rights. The lesson concludes with a reflection and debate on the effectiveness of various forms of government, encouraging students to connect their knowledge and think critically about governance globally.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
- What different forms of government are there in the world?
- Which type of government is the most effective or successful?
