Key stage 3 • Law and the justice system • Lessons

How do courts work in practice?

This lesson is part 4 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How well is justice served through the legal system?

This lesson introduces students to the role-play simulated court trial that will take place in the final lesson for this scheme of work. Students explore the dynamics of a courtroom setting, examining its layout, participants and etiquette. They understand the different roles within a court case and discuss appropriate behaviour and courtroom decorum. Through simulations and discussions, they develop an understanding of courtroom proceedings and the importance of respect for legal processes.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:

  1. What does a court case look like?
  2. Who is in the courtroom during a case?
  3. How should one behave in a courtroom?
