How has migration affected our society?
This lesson is part 3 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Why does our changing community identity matter?
This lesson develops Citizenship skills such as critical thinking, research, discussion, collaboration, and evaluation by exploring migration in the UK. Students analyse its features, management, and impacts while addressing sensitive and controversial issues with empathy and adherence to school policies.
The lesson begins with a fact-matching activity to challenge misconceptions, followed by a fact-finding task to prepare for a debate on the motion: “Migration in the UK is out of control.” Students analyse migration’s impacts through a card sort and participate in a structured debate, building evidence-based arguments.
The session concludes with a plenary summarising findings and reflecting on migration’s positive and negative impacts. A takeaway task invites students to create a collage showing how migration has shaped the UK. The lesson promotes critical reflection, balanced discussions, and empathy.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
1. What are the key features of migration to the UK?
2. How is migration managed in the UK?
3. What are the effects of migration?
