How should public money be spent? Lesson 3 of 6
Key stage 3 (ages 11-14) • Finance & The Economy • Lesson and support materials
How should public money be spent?
This lesson is part 3 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can political decisions impact the health of our society?
This lesson continues learning about how services are funded through public spending, specifically in relation to health. Students find out how the Government prioritises funding for public services. They investigate the role of the Chancellor of the Exchequer in setting the national budget and allocating funding for spending priorities to Government departments. Through analysis of diagrams, charts and a card-sorting activity, students will investigate the budget and expenditure for the NHS in England. A focus on smoking and the sale of tobacco will lead to an evaluation of the taxation involved in the sale of tobacco.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
- Who is in charge of our health budget?
- How is our country’s tax revenue distributed?
- What is the cost of smoking to the NHS and society?
