Key stage 3 (ages 11-14) • Sustainability • Lesson and support materials

Is sustainability an important issue for consumers?

This lesson is part 2 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can we be informed consumers?

In this lesson, students explore sustainability before beginning to consider its relationship to consumerism. They focus on the impact of climate change and why environmental sustainability is so important. They then learn about social and economic aspects of sustainability, before investigating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. At the end of the lesson, they consider whether sustainable factors should influence what we buy as consumers.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:
  1. What is sustainability?
  2.  What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
  3.  Should sustainable considerations influence what we buy as consumers?
