Key stage 3 • Law and the justice system • Lessons
Is the criminal justice system in the UK successful?
This lesson is part 6 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How well is justice served through the legal system?
As a conclusion to this unit of work, students simulate a court trial and sentencing. Students reflect on their roles in the simulated trial, assessing success and areas for improvement. They analyse the trial’s outcomes, considering the fairness of procedures and decisions. Through discussion on the key enquiry question, they explore the concept of justice and how it’s achieved through legal processes, cultivating critical thinking and a thorough understanding of the criminal judicial system.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
- What did we learn through our roles in the court trial?
- What reflections can we make about the court case?
- How well is justice served?
