Teaching democracy in Citizenship - a summary

This Summary provides an overview of the knowledge and understanding about democracy that should be developed through the subject of Citizenship. Democracy is a key overaching concept that brings together many themes and dimensions of the subject. 

Teaching about democracy should involve pupils in active experiences of democracy in the school and wider community and engage them in using their knowledge and understanding whilst aquiring and developing democractic skills.

Learning about democracy should begin in primary education and continue in secondary. Citizenship has a non-statutory framework at key stages 1 and 2 and is a statutory National Curriculum subject at key stages 3 and 4.
