Windrush, Refugees and Asylum Seeking – Busting the Myths
This lesson is part 4 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Why does our changing community identity matter?
This lesson focuses on media literacy, critical thinking, and discussion while exploring migration, fairness, and human rights, particularly through study of the Windrush generation. Students begin by addressing misconceptions about migration with a true-or-false activity, followed by a recap of core definitions. They learn about Windrush’s historical context through discussions, video analysis, and reflection on firsthand accounts, emphasising empathy and critical evaluation of sources.
Students also explore the societal impact of migration, human rights concerns, and protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. A takeaway task deepens understanding by researching individual stories, public reactions, and related legislation. The lesson fosters informed discussions about migration, highlighting its complexity and diverse contributions to UK society.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
1. Refugees, asylum seekers or migrants?
2. Who are the Windrush generation?
3. How were they treated at the time?
