What is a private members’ Bill? Part 1

This lesson is part 4 of a sequence of 7 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can citizens and Parliament work together for a more sustainable future?

This lesson introduces students to key concepts surrounding law and Parliament, beginning with a competitive keyword activity to reinforce terminology. students then explore the purpose of laws through a class discussion and mind-mapping exercise, challenging misconceptions about law and justice. The lesson progresses to an explanation of Parliament, focusing on the distinct roles of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Students watch a video and summarise these roles, deepening their understanding of democracy and law-making. They then examine the House of Lords’ functions in scrutinising legislation and consider how laws impact daily life. Finally, the lesson covers parliamentary legislation, including how Bills become Acts, different types of Bills, and the legislative process. Students consolidate their learning by creating a diagram and completing an exit ticket task to demonstrate their understanding.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:

  1. Why do we have laws?
  2. What is Parliamentary legislation?
  3. What is the role of the House of Lords?
