What is a private members’ Bill? Part 2
This lesson is part 5 of a sequence of 7 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can citizens and Parliament work together for a more sustainable future?
In this lesson, students will deepen their understanding of how sustainability and climate education are addressed in UK legislation. They will explore Lord Knight’s proposed Sustainability Bill, comparing it to existing climate laws and considering why legislative change is necessary. By engaging with Lord Knight’s own words, students will gain insight into the motivations behind policymaking and the role of government in tackling climate change.
Students will also examine how a Bill passes through the House of Lords, helping them understand the legislative process. Through a role-playing media interview, they will apply their learning by communicating policy ideas effectively, enhancing their critical thinking and presentation skills.
The lesson encourages students to think like decision-makers, reinforcing the importance of engaging with political processes to drive change. A takeaway task will allow them to extend their learning by researching climate education in the curriculum, investigating the Bill further, or gathering student opinions on the issue.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
- Why is Lord Knight proposing a Sustainable Citizenship Bill?
- How does a Bill pass through the House of Lords?
- How could I take action and become a climate leader?
