What is our local community and how am I part of it?

This lesson is part 1 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Why does our changing community identity matter?

This first lesson focuses on developing Citizenship skills and understanding key concepts such as community, belonging, and diversity. Through activities that promote critical thinking, discussion, collaboration, and problem-solving, students explore their identity and the role they play in their communities. Beginning with an entry task that examines personal connections, the lesson progresses to self-reflection on identity and participation in diverse social groups. Students also analyse the concept of community and its evolving nature, with localised examples providing relevance and context.

Tasks include mind mapping, class discussions, and research on census data to help students understand the makeup and dynamics of their local communities. Emphasis is placed on fostering empathy, respectful dialogue, and awareness of multiple identities and cultural diversity. The lesson concludes with reflective activities that encourage students to think about their relationships with neighbours and community groups. Assessment opportunities, such as verbal feedback, written tasks, and plenary discussions, ensure students’ understanding of the material while supporting their personal connection to the topics.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:

1. How can I explain what identity is?
2. What makes up my community?
3. How do I fit into my community?
