What is Parliament? Lesson 1 of 6

Key stage 3 • Lessons

What is Parliament?

This lesson is part 1 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Who runs the United Kingdom?

As a starting point for considering who runs the United Kingdom, students develop an understanding of what makes up Parliament and the functions of each different component. In a series of tasks focusing on knowledge, review and think-pair-share, they learn in turn about the roles of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the monarch. A retrieval task at the end of the lesson provides an opportunity to assess acquired knowledge.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:
  1. What makes up Parliament?
  2. What are the functions of each part of Parliament?
  3. Who are some of the people that work in Parliament?
