Key stage 3 • Law and the justice system • Lessons

What is the purpose of sentencing?

This lesson is part 2 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How well is justice served through the legal system?

This lesson focuses on the various purposes and outcomes of sentencing in the context of the justice system. It encourages students to reflect on why individuals are sentenced and how different types of sentences contribute to societal goals. Multiple offender scenarios will be used to illustrate how different purposes of sentences apply, such as deterrence in the case of a repeat burglar or reformation for a drug offender. The lesson encourages critical thinking about the aims of sentencing and how they can be balanced to achieve justice in society.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:

  1. Why do we sentence criminals?
  2. How do sentences contribute to society?
  3. What is the most important aim of sentencing?
