Key stage 3 • Sustainablity and climate • Model curriculum

What laws exist to protect the environment?

This lesson is part 3 of a sequence of 7 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can citizens and Parliament work together for a more sustainable future?

In this lesson, students will explore green crime, its causes, and its consequences. They will develop an understanding of how environmental crimes impact both people and the planet and consider the role of laws and international cooperation in tackling these issues.

Through case studies and discussions, students will examine real-world examples, learning how evidence strengthens arguments for action. They will also critically assess whether existing laws and punishments for green crimes are effective.

The lesson will encourage students to think about active citizenship, considering who holds the power to create change and how they, as individuals, can take action. A takeaway task will prompt them to research recent examples of green crime, reinforcing their learning through real-world connections.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:

  1. What is green crime?
  2. What laws and consequences are applicable to green crime?
  3. How can we take action to hold people to account for green crimes?
