Key stage 3 (ages 11-14) • Politics, Parliament & Government • Lesson and support materials

What’s the difference between government and Parliament?

This lesson is part 2 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Who runs the United Kingdom?

Students apply the knowledge they gained about Parliament in lesson 1 to explore the differences between government and Parliament. They develop an understanding of the relationship between the two, focusing in particular on how Parliament holds the government to account. They discuss and write about why it is so important we hold the government to account in our democracy.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:
  1. What is government?
  2. How does Parliament make the government accountable?
  3. Why do we need to hold the government to account?
