Who makes the law and where does it come from?
This lesson is part 1 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: Does our legal system protect citizens’ rights?
This opening lesson focuses on helping students understand the concepts of law, justice, rights, and democracy. Through interactive tasks, discussions, and reflections, they develop critical thinking and empathetic understanding of these essential societal pillars.
The lesson emphasises the Rule of Law, its historical evolution, and its role in ensuring equality, fairness, and rights protection. Activities like spider diagrams, matching tasks, and flowcharts facilitate comprehension of legal processes and the law-making system. By integrating historical context, such as the changes introduced by King Henry II, with modern examples, students gain a dynamic view of how laws evolve to meet societal needs. The session concludes with a reflective plenary where students conceptualise their own laws, encouraging engagement with legislative principles.
Students will work towards answering the following questions:
- What is law and justice?
- Why do we need laws?
- Where do laws come from?
