Why do laws change over time?

This lesson is part 4 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How do laws affect us?

In this lesson, students investigate the concept of legal evolution, focusing on why laws need adapting over time. Examining different legislation to analyse historical and contemporary examples of laws changing helps to develop their understanding of the law. Students use the example of the progression of online technology to analyse how and why laws develop over time. Through the exploration of how legal amendments are recognised within society, students understand how they can make themselves aware of new laws in the future.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:
  1. What laws have changed over time and what are the reasons for this?
  2. How does the law respond to emergencies?
  3. How do we know when the law has changed?
