Key stage 4 • Politics, Parliament and Government • Model curriculum

Working in politics – what can you do?

This lesson is part 6 of a sequence of 6 lessons addressing the key enquiry: How can we become the future political leaders?

In this final lesson of the unit, students explore the wide range of careers available in politics and related sectors, from becoming an MP to working for NGOs or the civil service. The lesson aims to inspire students by highlighting how they can actively contribute to political change, whether through elected positions, advisory roles, or activism. Students engage in discussions, watch informative videos, and take part in activities that help them identify potential career paths and understand the responsibilities that come with making a difference in society.

Through multiple-choice questions, knowledge checks, and reflective discussions, students consolidate their learning from the unit. They revisit their initial ideas about political careers, expanding their understanding of the opportunities available. The lesson concludes with a motivational reflection on how their newfound political knowledge can empower them to drive change, whether in leadership roles or through active participation in democratic processes. A takeaway task encourages students to explore youth political engagement platforms, reinforcing the idea that political influence is not limited to elected officials.

Students will work towards answering the following questions:

  1. What careers are available in politics and related workplaces?
  2. How are we responsible for making change happen?
