Following the devastating terrorist attack in Manchester, many schools will be dealing with questions and concerns from pupils about what happened and why. It is important for teachers to provide curriculum space to talk about questions and concerns, and challenge misconceptions but not be rushed into a reactive response, particularly while information is still emerging.

This project focused on critical thinking, problem solving and enquiry skills, and taking informed and responsible action. It involved five Citizenship lessons with four Year 9 and 10 classes. Pupils explored concepts of extremism and terrorism and the role of the media through critical engagement with real life case studies.
Exploring issues of extremism and radicalisation through enquiry
Ryan Mason, Assistant Head Teacher and Teacher in Charge of Citizenship, led work on The ACT Building Resilience Project at Addey and Stanhope School in London.
This project focused on critical thinking through six Citizenship lessons with Year 9 pupils. Pupils explored concepts of extremism, radicalisation and terrorism from different perspectives and carried out independent and small group research using enquiry methodologies.
