Exploring the ‘Learn to Discern’ media literacy programme in the US

Association for Citizenship Teaching members from across England have made the trip across the Atlantic to participate in a Media Literacy Exchange in the United States. In a programme sponsored by the US Embassy in London and facilitated by global development and education organisation, IREX, teachers will be visiting Washington DC, New York and Boston in order to expand their knowledge and practice in media literacy. Ben Miskell, Citizenship teacher from Sheffield, is one of the ten participants.

Exploring issues of extremism and radicalisation through enquiry

Ryan Mason, Assistant Head Teacher and Teacher in Charge of Citizenship, led work on The ACT Building Resilience Project at Addey and Stanhope School in London.

This project focused on critical thinking through six Citizenship lessons with Year 9 pupils. Pupils explored concepts of extremism, radicalisation and terrorism from different perspectives and carried out independent and small group research using enquiry methodologies.

Sanum Khan, Head of Citizenship, led work on The ACT Building Resilience Project at Chalfonts Community College in Buckinghamshire.

The project focused on critical thinking, problem solving and enquiry skills and taking informed and responsible actions through eight Citizenship lessons with about sixty Year 9 students. Pupils explored different political ideologies and the controversial issues of freedom fighting, extremism and popular uprising using national and international case studies.

Helen Blachford, Curriculum Leader PSCHE, led work on The ACT Building Resilience Project at Priory School in Portsmouth.

This project focused on critical thinking, problem solving and enquiry skills through three Citizenship lessons with two Year 9 classes. Pupils explored concepts of democracy, rule of law and rights and responsibilities in the context of media bias/falsification in reporting about Islam and Islamophobia.
