ACT seeks new Trustees at exciting time

Do you have an interest in education and charity governance? Why not consider a role on our Board of Trustees.

Updated 21 March 2023: The board vacancies have now been filled.

Introducing our charity

The Association for Citizenship Teaching (ACT) is an education charity and teaching association that was first established in 2001.  ACT is recognised by the Department for Education as the subject association for Citizenship.

Our mission is to support the teaching of high quality Citizenship education and to promote wider public understanding Citizenship and democracy education.

Our vision is for all young people to be active, informed citizens. Through effective Citizenship education, they should be equipped with the knowledge, skills and experience to participate in, and shape a strong and vibrant democracy. This should be underpinned by the values of equality, fairness and justice.

The opportunity

This is an exciting time for ACT.  Citizenship has been part of the the National Curriculum in schools in England for over 20 years. Through a new four year programme we are expanding our reach to schools. We have recently launched new and improved membership packages and our new website. We’re also seeking to enhance our influence on education policy-making and strengthen the status of Citizenship education as a national entitlement for every child. For more details about our purpose, work and staffing, please visit our website and view our strategic plan.

The ACT team, led by Chief Executive Liz Moorse, provides programmes and support to our members and teachers more widely. The team works closely with our Council of Teachers who are a group of volunteer teachers and education experts. The Council help us ensure everything we do meets the needs and requirements of schools and colleges.

Our Chief Executive works alongside the Board to ensure that financial resources are well planned and reporting is complete. We also work with a range of contractors who provide specialist services. For example to support ACT’s website, produce the biannual Teaching Citizenship journal and to provide consultancy on funded projects.

Join our Board of Trustees

Our Board of Trustees currently comprises eight volunteers. We are looking to add one or two new members to our Board of Trustees to replace colleagues who have reached the end of their term, and to help us expand and enhance the knowledge and expertise available to ACT. In particular, we are keen to hear from those whose experience and expertise is in the areas of business development, digital marketing and/or finance.

If you are interested in applying, please read the recruitment pack. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, so you are encouraged to either submit your formal interest or reach out should you wish to have an informal discussion regarding the role. Details are provided in the recruitment pack below.
